Hydraulic system design for machines

From the operating requirement to the hydraulic circuit, components and coordinated controls.

Define the system before selecting the parts

Hydraulic system design starts with the work the machine must do: the loads, movements, speeds and operating sequence. We help translate those requirements into a hydraulic circuit and a component specification for new machines or modifications to existing installations.

System pressure and flow are considered alongside the available drive power, duty cycle, heat generation, filtration, control signals and the space available for the installation. The interfaces between hydraulics, electrical controls and mechanics need to be agreed as one project.

Scope agreed for your application

  • Hydraulic circuit development and selection of valves, pumps and associated components.
  • Custom manifold or power-unit configuration where required by the machine.
  • Coordination of electronic controls and other engineering disciplines with specialist partners.
  • An agreed supply, assembly, test and commissioning scope rather than an assumed package.

How the project progresses

  1. Requirements. Share the machine function, operating conditions, existing drawings and constraints.
  2. Technical concept. Agree the circuit approach, interfaces and information that still needs verification.
  3. Scope and quotation. Confirm what is designed, supplied, tested and commissioned, together with the schedule.
  4. Delivery and handover. Complete the agreed scope and documentation for the application.

Modernising an existing system

For a retrofit, the installed component codes and hydraulic diagram are essential. Replacing a pump or valve changes more than its mounting arrangement: control behaviour, pressure settings, signal interfaces and the machine sequence must also be checked.
